Banded agate

The colors here are produced by trace amounts of iron and other minerals that were present when the silica-rich fluids slowly deposited layer after layer inside a cavity (often in volcanic rock). The more pronounced horizontal-ish layering in the lower piece combined with the swirling upper piece shows how variable agate patterns can be even within the same nodule.
